Subsidy Fraud: Akintola Williams Delloite Indicted As Court Admits Key Documents In Trial of Walter Wagbatsoma

The audit firm of Akintola Williams Delloite was today indicted for playing a role in a series of fuel subsidy scams.
Walter Wagbatsoma in cour
The firm’s indictment surfaced today during the continued trial of fuel importers, Walter Wagbatsoma and Adaoha Ugo-Ngadi as well as their company, Ontario Oil and Gas Limited. The accused are part of a clique of fuel importers accused of making fraudulent fuel subsidy claims to the tune of N1.9 billion.
Continuing his testimony today, Sheu Muhammed, an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), stunned the court by accusing the government’s official auditing firm, Akintola Williams Delloite, of culpability in widespread subsidy scam. Mr. Mohammed began his testimony last week.
At today’s court session, the EFCC submitted two documents which demonstrated the audit firm’s unsavory role in the extensive scheme. It is conservatively estimated that numerous fuel marketers defrauded the Nigerian people of more than $6 billion through inflated subsidy claims.
Justice Lateefat Okunnu ruled to admit the documents despite strong objections by one of the defense lawyers, Wole Olanipekun. Mr. Olanipekun tried, but failed, to suppress the admittance of the documents on technical grounds.

Jonathan, Amaechi opt for peace at last

There are indications that the presidency and Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi may have opted for a peaceful resolution of the crisis between them to avoid overheating the polity and endangering the democratic process.
Sources close to the presidency and Amaechi told Saturday Tribune that all sides to the conflict have realized the danger in allowing the conflict to degenerate further, hence the sudden embrace of peace.
It was gathered that the PDP hierarchy and the presidency were worried that the crisis was being kept on the front burner by the media on a daily basis, a suggestion that some forces were trying to benefit unduly from the crisis.
According to sources, “it appeared to the government of the day that some forces are trying to use the Rivers crisis as an avenue to unduly get to the root of the nation’s democracy,” a source said.
“The presidency is disturbed anytime the Rivers crises is seen as a Jonathan/Amaechi war. The president has distanced himself from the crisis but every attempt is being made to drag his name in. I can tell you that the government has decided to douse the tension and encourage the combatants to embrace peace,” a source told Saturday Tribune.

Governors Rabiu Kwankwaso and Sule Lamido arriving Port Harcourt
A team of Northern governors on a solidarity visit to Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi, have asked the Inspector General of Police to immediately redeploy the Commissioner of Police in the state, Joseph Mbu, over what they described as his unprofessionalism and political partisanship in the multiple crises rocking the state.
In a statement distributed to journalists shortly before they drove out of the Government House in the company of their host, the governors — Babangida Aliyu (Niger) Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) —  said having interacted with stakeholders in the state, it was clear that  Commissioner Mbu was being used to persecute the Rivers State Governor.
“We wish to call on the Inspector General of Police to hearken to the voices of reason and immediately redeploy and discipline Commissioner Joseph Mbu,” the statement said. “His action smacks of unprofessionalism and political partisanship which is unbecoming of his office.”
Talking really tough, the governors threatened that they would reconsider their earlier commitment to contribute part of their federal allocations towards the funding of the police if the Rivers police boss was not removed and sanctioned.
